Many MSI fans might know that MSI gaming notebooks always got best cooling design even on its GP,GL,GF and GV gaming notebook series, this time we tested the GP62MVR 7RF with GeForce GTX1060 3GB GDDR5 graphics to challenge other 2 models with Max-Q Design graphics, one of GTX1060 Max-Q Design with 6GB GDDR5 and the other one of GTX1060 Max-Q Design with 3GB GDDR5, see how big is the difference between high performance version of GTX1060 3GB gaming notebook and low power version GTX1060 Max-Q Design 6GB/3GB graphics.

GP/GF/GV/GL models with GTX1060 got stronger cooling design than others

When I got GP62MVR 7RF, it’s slimmer design than GE62, because the GP62M series remove classical optical drive to save space and reduced the height and weight of the GP62MVR 7RF, that makes the GP62M slimmer and lighter than most competitors in the same market position. So as GF, GL and GV series.

GP62MVR 7RF of cooling design comes with dual fan and 6 heatpipes, that called Cooler Boost 4 from MSI cooling design theory. Take a look on 3DMark 11 P Score, GTX1060 with Turbo Mode got P13240 score, and CPU remains under 83°C, GPU under 73°C, that makes the notebook system keep at highest performance with CPU Boost and GPU Overclocked, the cooling system contribute a lot on this stable status for gamers and pro users. Another GTX 1060 Max-Q 6GB notebook only got P10700 score, the lowest one was just over P10000 score.

Another one with GTX1060 Max-Q 6GB, 3DMark 11 got P10717 score, the other one with lowest score just over P10000,
it's just similar as GTX 1050 Ti graphics.

Take a look on 3DMark Fire Strike, the GP62MVR got 10500 score, another one with GTX 1060 Max-Q 6GB graphics only got 8770 score, seems the Max-Q version got 19% less performance than normal version. The other one with GTX 1060 Max-Q 3GB graphics only got 8210 score.

The newer benchmark called "SUPERPOSITION BENCHMARK" designed by Unigine 2, with latest DirectX12 engine that makes this benchmark comes with great lighting effects, show the real-time rendering in a classical lab with anti-gravity machine effects, the 1080P High preset benchmark result showed 6034 score, and GPU kept under 70°C.

But when we come back to see another one with GTX1060 Max-Q Design 6GB graphics, it’s only got 4892 score, it’s 23% less than GP62MVR with GTX1060 on Turbo Mode. And GPU temp under 69°C. But if we check CPU temp., it's over 96°C to be overheat and could be easily throttling.

You Think GTX1060 Is VR Ready? The GTX1060 Max-Q Design Is Not.

Maybe VR gaming is not so hot this year, but to play VR games or VR experience with higher detail in the near future, that's still one of the advantage if you buy such a high level gaming notebook. The VR Mark got very detail info about the preset and hardware setup, the GP62MVR 7RF with regular GTX 1060 3GB runs smooth to play VR games over 120~133fps during the test, that's the most important point that maintain the rate over 120 frames per second.

When theme turn to the notebook with GTX1060 Max-Q Design 6GB graphics, it became lower score of 5517, and FPS rate is around 103~120fps, just behind the standard of 6000 score and 120fps for Smooth VR games experience. The GTX 1060 Max-Q Design of 3GB graphics notebook even got lower 5150 score, it’s far from 6000 score to keep 120FPS frame rate for smooth VR experience.

The best value for FHD Ultra detail gaming is GTX1060, but never Max-Q

So let's come out the conclusion finally but easily, the GP62MVR with GTX1060 is over 21% faster on most of the benchmarks, and 27% faster when play PUBG game, that's a huge gap for gamers when they paid similar price range but get such lower performance on another with GTX1060 Max-Q Design 6GB graphics and the other with GTX 1060 Max-Q Design 3GB graphics, that's a waste of money to have the similar “SPEC.” but not real performance. Few of the benchmark numbers might not align with linear theory because with heavy loading games as PUBG or ACO, other models were throttling during gaming, the test results just reflect this issue.
